On the tenth anniversaryof Czech involvement in the US- and then NATO-led military intervention in Afghanistan, Czech Ministry of Defense spokesman Jiří Štábl, announced that to date some 7,000 military personnel have performed tours of duty, with operations costing a total of Kč 8.3 billion. Four Czechs have lost their lives serving in Afghanistan.

The first Czech involvement in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan was the deployment of six field hospitals. This was followed by the Defense Ministry sending meteorologists, pyrotechnics specialists and air traffic control experts.

From 2005 to 2007, Czech troops were deployed in the Fayzabad District in northeast Afghanistan, where they provided protection for a German reconstruction team. In the autumn of 2008, Czech soldiers participated in the mission to provide backup for a base manned by Dutch troops in the Oruzgan Province.

Prior to the formation of the NATO-led ISAF mission in Afghanistan, the Czech Republic provided its 601st group of special forces for the US-led Enduring Freedom operation in response to the terrorist attacks on the US on September 11, 2011.

A Czech reconstruction team is now operating in the Logar Province, where it is rebuilding infrastructure destroyed in the war.

Some 130,000 military personnel from 48 countries are currently conducting the ISAF mission of which around 720 are Czechs. In 2012, the Czech contingent will be reduced by 100.
