Škoda Auto puts price on new small car model

Škoda Auto says it will initially launch its new small car model on the Czech market with prices starting at Kč 179,900

The Czech Republic’s biggest carmaker, Škoda Auto, said Tuesday that it will start exclusive sales of its new small car, the Citigo, on the Czech market in November with the basic starting price set at Kč 179,900.

Škoda Auto, part of Germany’s Volkswagen Group, says it seeking to capture a new section of customers with its latest model. The manufacturer added that it previously did not have an adequate offer in the small car section of the market.

New targets

Young drivers, cash-strapped families with young children or older drivers with an old, second-hand Škoda car which they are seeking to trade in, form part of the new target group, the company said in a statement.

While the basic version of the car starts at just under Kč 180,000, more advanced and equipped versions will sell for just under Kč 210,000.  The Czech carmaker’s range currently comprises five basic models: the Fabia, Roomster, Octavia, Yeti and top of the range Superb.

Škoda Auto, the biggest Czech manufacturing exporter, announced Monday a 21.1 percent rise in sales for the first nine months of the year to total €7.6 billion compared with the same period in 2010. Provisional results for the first three quarters are up 83.1 percent at €575 million. The company delivered 664,800 vehicles in the nine months ending September, an increase of 16.8 on the first three quarters of 2010.

Recession fears

The Czech government has been worried that a potential worldwide economic slowdown would severely impact the bottom line for Škoda and two other carmakers located in the country, Hyundai and the Toyota-Peugeot-Citroen (TPCA) joint venture.

Škoda is currently aiming to unveil a new model every six months with the aim of building up overall sales to reach an annual 1.5 million vehicles by 2018.
