Czech consumer price inflation slowed to 2.4 pct last month, slighly below expectations of the market and central bank

Czech year-on-year inflation slowed in December to 2.4 percent from November’s 2.5 percent thanks to a slower increase in fuel prices, which rose by 7.2 percent over the month compared with the previous 12.0 percent.

December’s figure brings Czech average inflation for 2011 to 1.9 percent, compared with the average 1.5 percent in 2010, the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ) added.

Apart from fuel, the main factors driving prices higher were housing rental charges —  with an 11.8 percent average rise in charges for properties with regulated rents as reforms move to bring them into line with those paying market rates — energy charges; and the price of basic foodstuffs such as bread, flour, eggs and milk.

Prices of clothes, entertainments, domestic consumer goods and mobile phone services dropped.

The month-on-month rise in consumer prices came in at 0.4 percent.

Komerční banka (KB) said that the rise was slightly  lower than expectations, adding that food prices had been pushed up by the weakening of the Czech crown against other major currencies. The Czech National Bank (ČNB) was not likely to be forced to put a brake on rising prices KB said, sticking to its prediction that it would leave its main interest rate unchanged until the end of 2013.
