Czech football bosses confirm bid to hold under-21s

  16:27

After narrowly losing last time round, the Czech Republic is rebounding with another bid to host the European under 21 finals

The Czech Republic faces competition from seven countries to host the European under-21 championships in 2015, according to top officials from the country’s national football association.

The country lost out to Israel in its bid to host the event in 2013 but now believes that it is in a strong position to succeed with its follow-up attempt, which was officially announced on Friday.

“We have a certain moral lead, and the fact is that we only just lost last time around. Our strong point is that we are not candidates for anything else, which should be taken into consideration,” said association adviser Petr Fousek, who has been put in charge of the bid. ‘We have a certain moral lead, and the fact is that we only just lost last time around.’

The seven competing countries so far are Russia, Austria, Wales, Azerbaijan, Portugal, Greece, and Hungary. A decision on the venue should be taken by the European football’s governing body, UEFA, in March.

Czech football officials have been pressing the local claim with football association chairman Miroslav Pelta recently visiting UEFA’s Swiss headquarters. The football association is also lobbying to be the host of the world futsal championships in 2016. That decision will be taken by football’s international governing body, FIFA.
