52 people charged with manipulating military tenders

Eleven former Defense Ministry employees are among those charges in manipulating Kč 330 million in orders between 2005 and ’07

Some 52 people were charged by the České Budějovice regional attorney’s office with manipulating public orders at the Ministry of Defense, state attorney Barnabas Liška said at a press conference.

The suspects — including 38 private sector employees, 11 ex-ministry employees, two notaries and a defense lawyer— allegedly manipulated Kč 330 million in public orders, mostly involving construction. The suspects were charged with misuse of power, fraud, bribery and criminal conspiracy among other crimes. If found guilty, each suspect faces up to 10 years in prison, according to news agency reports.

The anti-corruption police on Feb. 17 had recommended that 54 people be charged over incidents that occurred with tenders between 2005 and ’07. No reason was given for charges  being brought against only 52.

Liška said that proceedings in the České Budějovice Regional Court will probably take a long time because of the number of the people charged and the number of potential witnesses, as well as the amount of evidence. The criminal file has 18,000 pages plus 40,000 pages of supplements, according to the Czech News Agency (ČTK).
